About
There’s just something about vintage, conventional geared airplanes! Maybe it’s the challenge of landing, or the nostalgia of the early decades of aviation. Certainly, some of the allure is the raw simplicity of the planes themselves. Cutting edge avionics? Not a chance. Gas-guzzling engines? Hardly. Just a stick, two pedals, and a few basic instruments. Aviation for no reason other than experiencing the pure joy of flying low and slow. Stick your elbow out the window and watch the world go by below. Early in 2019, a group of local pilots started talking about the need for a tailwheel plane in Ft. Wayne. In a city this size, there was only one option available to rent, a late model Super Decathlon. It’s a fantastic airplane, but not very easy on the wallet. After extensive discussions, we formed 3 Rivers Taildraggers Flying Club. There are five charter members, and for the time being we are not accepting additional members. We want to get comfortable with our club before we consider expanding. In September 2019, we welcomed our first plane into the club, a 1959 Champion 7EC. Because we live near Class C airspace, we wanted a plane with full electric, including radios and transponder. N63394 has been upgraded to a Lycoming 0-235 engine, so takeoff rolls are short, and it cruises very comfortably at 90 mph while using about 5-6 gallons of gas/hour. We currently have a Challenger 2 Experimental with a 503 Rotax. This is the only plane in our club at this time.
