The Bell Ornithopters Flying Club, Inc. was established in September 1974 with employees from then Western Electric and Mountain Bell. Later that same year it was expanded to include all Bell System employees. With the break up of the Bell System the Club is now open to all AT&T, Avaya, Lucent Technologies, and Qwest employees, retired employees and family members. A limited number of special memberships have been extended to contract employees, past employees, and other persons that have a special interest in general aviation. The current membership is approximately 40 active pilots. The Club owns two IFR equipped Cessna 172 aircraft which are hangared at Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport (formerly JeffCo) northwest of Denver. Both upgraded with Garmin FGC 500 autopilots and two G5 instruments, removing the vacuum system. The purpose of the Club, a nonprofit incorporated club with the State of Colorado, is to promote general aviation and provide low cost flying to Club members and their families.
