Effect of particle inertia on the alignment of small ice crystals in turbulent clouds
Small non-spherical particles settling in a quiescent fluid tend to orient so that their broad side faces down, because this is a stable fixed point of their angular dynamics at small particle Reynolds number.

SAR image wave spectra to retrieve the thickness of grease-pancake sea ice using viscous wave models
Young sea ice composed of grease and pancake ice (GPI), as well as thin floes, considered to be the most common form of sea ice fringing Antarctica, is now becoming the 'new normal' also in the Arctic.

On the ice-nucleating potential of warm hydrometeors in mixed-phase clouds
The question whether or not the presence of warm hydrometeors in clouds may play a significant role in the nucleation of new ice particles has been debated for several decades.

How ice grows from premelting films and water droplets
Close to the triple point, the surface of ice is covered by a thin liquid layer (so-called quasi-liquid layer) which crucially impacts growth and melting rates.

Wave measurements from ship mounted sensors in the Arctic marginal ice zone
Increased research interest and economic activity in the Arctic raise the need for new observations of sea ice dynamics. Remote sensing as well as mathematical and numerical models of wave propagation in sea ice would be…

Application of the second law to the atmosphere: impacts of the third-law definition for the moist-air entropy
Calculations of entropy fluxes and production rate have been evaluated with some success to study atmospheric processes. However, recurring questions arise as to how best to take into account entropy flux due to radiatio…

The effect of turbulence on drifting snow sublimation
Sublimation of drifting snow, which is significant for the balances of mass and energy of the polar ice sheet, is a complex physical process with intercoupling between ice crystals, wind field, temperature, and moisture.…

Heat and water vapor transfer in the wake of a falling ice sphere and its implication for secondary ice formation in clouds
We perform direct numerical simulations of the settling of an ice sphere in an ambient fluid accounting for heat and mass transfer with the aim of studying in a meteorological context the case of falling graupel in humid…

An investigation into the interaction between waves and ice
This thesis is submitted in the partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Oslo.

Discrete-element model for the interaction between ocean waves and sea ice
We present a discrete element method (DEM) model to simulate the mechanical behavior of sea ice in response to ocean waves. The interaction of ocean waves and sea ice can potentially lead to the fracture and fragmentatio…

On the ocean wave attenuation rate in grease-pancake ice, a comparison of viscous layer propagation models with field data
The ability of viscous layer models to describe the attenuation of waves propagating in grease-pancake ice covered ocean is investigated.

Fast dynamics of water droplets freezing from the outside-in
A drop of water that freezes from the outside-in presents an intriguing problem: the expansion of water upon freezing is incompatible with the self-confinement by a rigid ice shell.

The mixed-phase version of moist-air entropy
The aim of this note is to derive the mixed-phase version of the moist-air entropy potential temperature $θ_s$ derived in Marquet (2011).

Effect of small floating disks on the propagation of gravity waves
A dispersion relation for gravity waves in water covered by disk-like impurities embedded in a viscous matrix is derived. The macroscopic equations are obtained by ensemble-averaging the fluid equations at the disk scale…

Gravity waves and high-altitude CO$_2$ ice cloud formation in the Martian atmosphere
We present the first general circulation model simulations that quantify and reproduce patches of extremely cold air required for CO$_2$ condensation and cloud formation in the Martian mesosphere.

An idealised experimental model of ocean surface wave transmission by an ice floe
An experimental model of transmission of ocean waves by an ice floe is presented. Thin plastic plates with different material properties and thicknesses are used to model the floe.

Sea ice floes dissipate the energy of steep ocean waves
Wave attenuation by ice floes is an important parameter for modelling the Arctic Oceans. At present, attenuation coefficients are extracted from linear models as a function of the incident wave period and floe thickness.…

The Impact of Oceanic Heat Transport on the Atmospheric Circulation: a Thermodynamic Perspective
The present study investigates how global thermodynamic properties of the climate system are affected by the changes in the intensity of the imposed oceanic heat transport in an atmospheric general circulation model in a…

Convective Ripening and Initiation of Rainfall
This paper discusses the evolution of the droplet size distribution for a liquid-in-gas aerosol contained in a Rayleigh-Bénard cell. It introduces a non-collisional model for broadening the droplet size distribution, ter…

Surge motion of an ice floe in waves: comparison of theoretical and experimental models
A theoretical model and an experimental model of surge motions of an ice floe due to regular waves are presented. The theoretical model is a modified version of Morrison's equation, valid for small floating bodies.

An experimental model of reflection and transmission of ocean waves by an ice floe
An experimental model of reflection and transmission of ocean waves by an ice floe is presented. Evolution of mechanically-generated, regular waves is monitored in front and in the lee of a solitary, square floe, made of…

Sub-Suns and Low Reynolds Number Flow
The phenomenon called the ``sub-Sun'' is the specular reflection of sunlight by horizontally oriented plates of ice. Although well-known in meteorological optics, the hydrodynamics of the orientation is not quantitativel…
