Are Single-Pilot Operations An Advantage Or A Disadvantage?

This study aims to investigate the potential benefits and drawbacks of Single-Pilot Operations (SPO) and to provide actionable insights for commercial airlines.

The State of UAS Operations at Airports, A Perspective from Airport Managers

As the number of Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (UAS) operating in our National Airspace System (NAS) increases, so do UAS operations near or at an airport.

Aircraft Energy Management: A Best Practice for Integrating Safety and Efficiency

Aircraft Energy Management: A Best Practice for Integrating Safety and Efficiency The airplane is the quintessential energy system, constantly transforming, transferring, distributing, storing, and exchanging various for…

Outsourcing Aircraft Maintenance and Related Safety Implications

The U.S aviation industry faced severe financial losses after the 9/11 incident. The financial loss that occurred between 2000 and 2009 in the U.S. alone was $54 billion dollars.

Managing Safety Risks in Airline Maintenance Outsourcing

The U.S aviation industry faced severe financial losses after the 9/11 incident. The financial loss that occurred between 2000 and 2009 in the U.S. alone was $54 billion dollars.

Analysis of Runway Incursion Trends: Implications for Cost-Benefit Analysis of Mitigation Investments

This causal-comparative and correlation study investigated the costs of runway incursion safety improvements in relation to their effectiveness to assess potential aviation system benefits. Two airports (Los Angeles Inter…

Development of a Statistical Model to Predict Australian Flight Students’ Valuation of Aviation Safety

This study was a quantitative approach to explore whether certain demographic factors, exposure to safety training, flight experience, and engagement could be used to develop a predictive model for how Australian flight …

An Alternative Method of Identification of a Failed Engine in Twin-Engine Propeller Aircraft

Previous research revealed that wrong identification of a failed engine during flight is not an uncommon event in twin-engine propeller aircraft.

UAS Maintenance: A Critical Component in Maintaining Airworthiness

Over the last several decades, the notion of traditional aircraft design has significantly changed. While there are many modern aircraft that resemble earlier models, their components, systems, and overall architecture h…

UAS Pilots Code: Tools to Advance UAS Safety & Professionalism

As unmanned aircraft operations become more ubiquitous in the National Airspace System, one of the key remaining challenges is instilling the precepts of safety culture, aviation professionalism, airmanship, and effectiv…

Characteristics of Helicopter Accidents Involving Male and Female Pilots

Studies examining aviation accidents have not found differences in accident rates by gender, though there may be gender differences in the types of accident.

Called to Safety? Individual and Combined Effects of Safety Climate and Occupational Callings on Aviator Safety Performance

This study examined the individual and combined effects of two potential antecedents to aviation-related safety performance: safety climate and occupational callings.

UAS Maintenance: A Critical Component in Maintaining Airworthiness

Over the last several decades, the notion of traditional aircraft design has significantly changed. While there are many modern aircraft that resemble earlier models, their components, systems, and overall architecture h…

Using Data Envelopment Analysis to Benchmark Safety Culture in Aviation Organizations

While organizations are increasingly encouraged to evaluate safety culture in the context of measurement of leading safety indicators within a safety management system, there remains no generally agreed upon means by whi…

An Alternative Method of Identification of a Failed Engine in Twin-Engine Turboprop Aircraft

Previous incidents and accidents involving twin-engine aircraft, including the recent TransAsia Flight 235 crash, have revealed that pilots are prone to mistakes in identifying the engine that fails, and subsequently, sh…

A Model of Human Harm from a Falling Unmanned Aircraft: Implications for UAS Regulation

This paper quantifies the human harm, in the form of fatalities and skull fractures, which could occur as a result of an unmanned aircraft falling from a height.

Peer Reviewed Safety Management System (SMS): Collaboration for Continuous Improvement (Literature Review)

Safe operations are essential for organizational success, perhaps no more so than in aviation. A culture of safety can be a leading contributor to an aviation organization’s success but developing such a culture and main…

Starting a Safety Management System Culture in Small Flight School Organizations

Small flight school organizations have unique cultures and challenges which are very different from larger air carrier and air charter organizations.

Measurable Outcomes of Safety Culture in Aviation - A Meta-Analytic Review

Though the complimentary concepts of safety culture and safety climate have become increasingly popular over the past three decades, they have only infrequently been central to research designed to examine the empirical …
