This workshop will offer two hours of classroom discussion on high altitude physiology followed by two hours of training in the High Altitude Laboratory (HAL). The HAL normobaric chamber uses air scrubbers to extract oxygen out of the enclosure creating a hypoxic environment inside and can simulate altitudes up to 30,000 feet. Because there is no change in atmospheric pressure, there is no danger of ear or sinus blocks, trapped gas, or decompression sickness. Participants will be able to experience their personal symptoms of hypoxia while performing cognitive and motor flight-related tasks; the goal of the hypoxia awareness training is to teach participants the hypoxia warning signs and how to mitigate the risk.
