Many aviation professionals feel confident in their ability to identify “situational awareness.” However, are aviation professionals really on the same page when they talk about situational awareness (SA)? How does SA differ from attention? How does SA differ from knowledge and expertise? What does “ahead of the airplane” really mean? This short course briefly surveys the theories and practical applications of SA in dynamic environments. Ways to measure SA are explored. Designing for SA in training, and ways to improve SA, as well as human factors issues that can interfere with SA will be discussed. Finally, class participants will operate a simulator to understand and evaluate SA. Key Objectives: Upon completion of this short course you will: Define situational awareness in a manner that is acceptable across several domains Understand how situational awareness is applied in aviation, as well as dynamic environments outside of aviation Be able to objectively measure situational awareness.
