Learning Design for the Next Generation of Aviation Professionals

Abstract

Generation Z (Gen Z) populations have lived in an environment where modern digital technology is very natural since they were born. This environment creates a uniqueness in the way Gen Z learns new skills and knowledge, which makes traditional aviation learning methods no longer optimal and effective for this generation. Today, the earliest populations of Gen Z have started to enter higher education and professional life in aviation. It is essential for the aviation training and education community to recognize Gen Z’s unique learning characteristics and be able to design new aviation learning media and delivery methods, which are effective and engaging for this digital-native generation. This conference paper will review the distinctive learning characteristics of Gen Z within the aviation training and education context, and discuss key considerations for the design of effective aviation learning media and engaging learning-delivery methods for Gen Z. The paper will also include recommendations on how instructors and instructional designers can practically implement the key considerations into aviation training and education programs.
