Aircraft involved

Probable cause & findings

The pilot's lifting off with the airplane at a high of angle of attack, which resulted in aerodynamic stall.

Factual narrative

The pilot reported that during the takeoff roll, he lost lateral control when he overcorrected to the left. The airplane lifted off at too high of an angle of attack, stalled, and impacted terrain to the left of the runway. There was extensive buckling of the fuselage just forward of the empennage. The pilot attributed the accident to "low time tailwheel pilot error." The pilot reported he had logged 110 hours in tailwheel airplanes performing takeoffs and landings, 64 hours of which were in the accident airplane. He added, "Additional tailwheel takeoff experience would have prevented the accident." The pilot reported that, during the takeoff roll, he lost "lateral" control when he overcorrected to the left. The airplane subsequently lifted off at too high of an angle of attack, stalled, and impacted terrain left of the runway. The fuselage just forward of the empennage sustained substantial damage. The pilot reported that there were no preaccident mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.
