the loss of engine power due to an exhaust valve failure. A factor related to the accident is the power line.

Factual narrative

On August 17, 1993, about 1645 central daylight time, a Cessna 152, N47716, sustained substantial damage during a forced landing near the Keokuk Municipal Airport, Keokuk, Iowa, following a loss of engine power. The student pilot was not injured. The local student solo training flight was operating without a flight plan in visual meteorological conditions. The student pilot reported the engine began to lose power and run rough during the initial climb following a touch-and-go landing. During the forced landing the student said he pulled the airplane up to avoid two power lines, and the airplane stalled and crashed. The engine was examined by an FAA Airworthiness Inspector. He found the exhaust valve in the #1 cylinder had broken, and there were two holes in the top of the cylinder. The student pilot was in the traffic pattern practicing touch- and-go landings. During the climb after a touch-and-go the engine began to run rough and lose power. The student attempted to make a forced landing in a field which was ahead of him. He pulled the airplane up to avoid two power lines which were in his path, and the airplane stalled and crashed.
