Factual narrative

On November 22, 1997, at 1700 central standard time, an American AA-1, N6214L, operated by a private pilot collided with a deer during the landing roll on runway 02 at the Nevada Municipal Airport, Nevada, Missouri. The 14 CFR personal flight was operating in visual meteorological conditions without a flight plan. The pilot and one passenger were not injured. The airplane was substantially damaged. The flight originated from Paola, Kansas, at 1630 cst. The pilot reported he had just touched down when he saw a deer standing off the left side of the runway approximately 50 yards ahead of his position. He reported he veered about 10 feet to the right to provide a greater clearance between the airplane and the deer. However, as he approached the deer's position it "suddenly bolted" onto the runway colliding with the left wing of the airplane. The pilot reported the airplane "momentarily" veered to the left upon contact with the deer. The pilot reported that during touchdown, he saw a deer standing off the left side of the runway and about 50 yards ahead of his position. He veered to the right in an attempt to provide a greater clearance between the airplane and the deer; however, the deer 'suddenly bolted' onto the runway and collided with the left wing of the airplane.
