Probable cause & findings
the inadvertent retraction of the landing gear by the pilot.
Factual narrative
On August 27, 1999, at 1426 central daylight time, a Beech 58, N912WJ, piloted by a commercial pilot, sustained substantial damage during landing, on runway 26L (7,004 feet by 150 feet, dry/asphalt), at the Spirit of Saint Louis Airport, Chesterfield, Missouri. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time of the accident. The personal flight was conducted under the provisions of 14 CFR Part 91 and was not on a flight plan. The pilot and pilot rated passenger reported no injuries. The local flight originated from the Spirit of Saint Louis Airport about 1400. In a written statement, the pilot stated that he inadvertently retracted the landing gear on the landing roll when he was attempting to retract the flaps. Inspection of the aircraft failed to reveal any preexisting anomalies. The pilot stated that while landing, he inadvertently retracted the landing gear after touchdown.
