Factual narrative
On May 4, 2001, at 1100 central daylight time, a Cessna 172M airplane, N5247R, registered to and operated by a private individual, was substantially damaged when it struck the ground during a go-around on runway 24 at the Harry P. Williams Memorial Airport, in Patterson, Louisiana. The commercial pilot and his passenger were not injured. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed and a flight plan was not filed for the 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight. The local flight departed from the airport at 1000. The purpose of the flight was to demonstrate the airplane to a perspective buyer. The pilot reported that during the landing flare, he encountered a "gust of wind [which] caused [the] wing to stall." He then applied full power to initiate a "go-around." Subsequently, the airplane "struck [the] runway on [the] right main wheel and [on the] nose wheel." The go-around was continued and "a normal landing resulted." During taxi to the ramp, the pilot noticed a vibration coming from the right main wheel. The airplane was inspected by a mechanic, who found the right main and nose wheels bent, and the firewall buckled. During the landing flare, the airplane encountered a gust of wind. After the pilot applied full power to initiate a go-around, the airplane impacted the runway on the right main wheel and on the nose wheel. The go-around was continued and a normal landing ensued.
