Probable cause & findings

THE PILOT'S FAILURE TO MAINTAIN DIRECTIONAL CONTROL DUE TO THE EXCESSIVE TAXI SPEED.

Factual narrative

On May 4, 1995, at 1900 central daylight time, a Cessna 180, N180JV, was substantially damaged during taxi at Adams Field Airport (LIT), Little Rock, Arkansas. The commercial pilot was not injured. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed for the business flight. According to the Pilot/Operator Report, the landing to runway 04L was normal, and due to an aircraft sequenced "tightly" behind, the pilot attempted to clear the runway at the first available taxiway to the left. The pilot cleared the runway "at a speed high enough that a ground loop occurred." Examination of the airplane by the FAA inspector revealed the right wing and elevator were damaged. THE LANDING TO RUNWAY 04L WAS NORMAL, AND DUE TO AN AIRCRAFT SEQUENCED 'TIGHTLY' BEHIND, THE PILOT ATTEMPTED TO CLEAR THE RUNWAY AT THE FIRST AVAILABLE TAXIWAY TO THE LEFT. THE PILOT CLEARED THE RUNWAY 'AT A SPEED HIGH ENOUGH THAT A GROUND LOOP OCCURRED' DAMAGING THE RIGHT WING AND ELEVATOR.
