Aircraft involved
Probable cause & findings
The pilot’s failure to maintain lateral control during landing in crosswind conditions.
Factual narrative
The pilot of the tailwheel-equipped airplane reported that, during the landing roll, a wind gust picked up the left wing. The right main landing gear collapsed and the right wing impacted the ground. The airplane sustained substantial damage to the right wing. The pilot reported that there were no preaccident mechanical failures or malfunctions with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation. A review of recorded data from the automated weather observation station located on the airport reported that, about 12 minutes before the accident, the wind was from 360° at 6 knots. The airplane landed on runway 07. The pilot of the tailwheel-equipped airplane reported that, during the landing roll, a wind gust picked up the left wing.
