Aircraft involved

Probable cause & findings

The student pilot's failure to maintain directional control during landing, which resulted in a runway excursion and impact with a taxiway sign.

Factual narrative

The solo student pilot reported that, during the approach for landing, the airspeed was slightly high, but he was maintaining runway centerline. The airplane subsequently touched down hard and veered left. He applied right aileron and rudder control, but the airplane continued left, exited the runway, and struck a taxiway sign. The airplane sustained substantial damage to the left wing. The student pilot reported that there were no preaccident mechanical failures or malfunctions with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation. The student pilot did not submit the NTSB Form 6120.1 Pilot/Operator Aircraft Accident/Incident Report.
