Factual narrative
ON AUGUST 16, 1985, A CESSNA 182 DITCHED AT SEA FOLLOWING FUEL STARVATION ABOUT 200 MILES NORTHEAST OF HAWAII WHILE ON A FERRY FLIGHT. THE PILOT REPORTED THAT HE HAD 23 HOURS OF FUEL ONBOARD FOR THE 16 HOUR FLIGHT. THE AIRCRAFT WAS EQUIPPED WITH AUXILIARY FUEL TANKS AND WAS OPERATING SUCCESSFULLY FOR A NUMBER OF HOURS PRIOR TO THE ENGINE QUITTING.
