Factual narrative

On August 19, 1995, about 1600 Pacific daylight time, N11834, a Cessna 177B, operated by the owner/pilot, collided with a fence during landing at Yamhill, Oregon, and was substantially damaged. The private pilot and his passenger were not injured. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed and no flight plan had been filed. The personal flight departed from Scappoose, Oregon, and was destined for Yamhill. The flight was conducted under 14 CFR 91. The pilot reported that while on final approach for runway 25, the late afternoon sun and a slightly smokey windshield resulted in the pilot temporarily losing sight of the runway. Just prior to touchdown, the airplane collided with a fence post short of the runway. After the airplane touched down, it nosed over and came to rest inverted. THE PILOT STATED THAT WHILE ON FINAL APPROACH, THE SUN AND A SMOKEY WINDSHIELD RESULTED IN HIM TEMPORARILY LOSING SIGHT OF THE RUNWAY.
