Aircraft involved
Probable cause & findings
The glider’s encounter with atmospheric conditions where lift was not sufficient to maintain flight.
Factual narrative
The pilot reported that during the return flight to the airport, the glider did not have sufficient altitude to reach the airport, and he had to initiate an off airport landing. During the forced landing on rough terrain, the glider ground looped to the right and the landing gear collapsed. The glider sustained substantial damage to the landing gear attachment points and fuselage. The pilot reported that there were no preaccident mechanical malfunctions or failures with the glider that would have precluded normal operation.
