The purpose of this Special Airworthiness Information Bulletin (SAIB) is to provide safety information to Rolladen Schneider sailplane owners. The SAIB includes information for the Rolladen Schneicer Model LS4 as follows:
• LS1-f, LS3 series, LS4 specific serial numbers: Ground Connection Between the Control Stick and C.G. Release (Technical Bulletin No. 41, 3026, 4004) • LS3, LS3-a, LS3-17, LS4: Position of the Brake Lever (Technical Bulletin No. 3036, 4019) • LS4, LS4a: Increase in Service Life (Technical Bulletin No. 4027a) • LS4, LS4-a: Inspection /Replacement of Trim Weight Holder (Technical Bulletin No. 3040, 4043) • LS3, LS4: Bonding of the Forward Elevator Mounting Bracket (Technical Bulletin No. 3043, 4035)
The FAA is currently conducting an assessment of foreign airworthiness directives that have been issued by the German Luftfahrt-Bundesamt (LBA) on German type certificated sailplanes. The LBA has issued German airworthiness directives on the service difficulty issues listed above. The FAA is currently assessing the need to issue a corresponding U.S. airworthiness directive on U.S. type certificated Rolladen Schneider sailplanes. In the interim, the FAA is using this Special Airworthiness Information Bulletin to inform U.S. owners of this model sailplane of the service difficulties reported by the manufacturer. If an Airworthiness Directive is determined to be appropriate, a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking will be issued. Enclosed is a copy of the LBA Airworthiness Directive and the manufacturer’s corresponding Technical Bulletin.
