Introduction: The purpose of this Special Airworthiness Information Bulletin (SAIB) is to provide recommended safety information to DG Flugzeugbau Models DG-100, DG-200, DG-300, DG-400, DG-600, and DG-600M sailplane owners on the following:
• Canopy Securing System Similar to a “Roger Hook” Design
Safety Issue: DG Flugzeugbau has developed Technical Notes 301-21 (DG-100), 323/11 (DG-200), 359/19 (DG-300), 826/39 (DG-400), 370/7 (DG-600), and 866/8 (DG-600M) consisting of a new canopy securing system similar to the “Roger Hook” design. The purpose of this system is to create an aft pivot point for the canopy to rotate about when jettisoned during flight. The German Federal Ministry of Transport commissioned a study on “Problems and Improvements of Canopy Jettisoning Systems.” One of the items concluded from this study was the increased level of safety afforded by an aft canopy “Roger Hook” design.
A copy of the DG Flugzeugbau Technical Note for this retrofit canopy securing system is included for your information, together with a couple of photographs of a similar installation on a Model DG-800. The FAA highly recommends that you retrofit your sailplane with this safety feature.
