SAIB CE-05-48 Current Issued 04/20/2005 Scheibe-Flugzeugbau GmbH SF 25C sailplanes

What is a SAIB?

A Special Airworthiness Information Bulletin is an FAA-issued advisory — not mandatory like an AD, but worth knowing about. SAIBs typically flag service bulletins, manufacturer recommendations, or emerging issues that don't (yet) rise to AD level.

Introduction

This Special Airworthiness Information Bulletin alerts you, owners and operators of Scheibe-Flugzeugbau GmbH model SF 25C sailplanes with a Rotax 912A (Modification 121) or Rotax 912S (Modification 165) engine, all serial numbers, that Luftfahrt- Bundesamt (LBA) has issued Airworthiness Directive (AD) 2003-160, dated May 29, 2003. This AD references Scheibe Service Bulletin (SB) 653-76, which addresses corrections and updates to the flight and maintenance manual.

Background

Scheibe has issued SB 653-76, dated January 15, 2003, which describes replacement procedures for updating the flight and maintenance manuals. The March 1997 edition of the English version of the Flight Manual provides incorrect endurance tables (kilometers instead of miles). The remaining actions provide revisions to accommodate Rotax engine modifications.

Recommendation

Foreign ADs aren’t considered mandatory actions on US aircraft. The changes that are described in the LBA AD involve issues that don't affect sailplane limitations; therefore this issue doesn’t meet the requirements for a US AD. However, we recommend all owners and operators comply with actions outlined in the specified service bulletin.
