Introduction
This Special Airworthiness Information Bulletin (SAIB) alerts you, owners and operators of British Aerospace (Operations) Ltd. (BAE Systems), HP 137 Jetstream MK1, Jetstream Series 200, and 3100 and 3200 aircraft, that BAE Systems has issued a Service Bulletin (SB) 32-JA020741 to inspect the nose landing gear steering jack piston rod to the eye-end.
Background
The Civil Aviation Authority of the United Kingdom has informed the FAA of cracking found in the nose landing gear steering jack piston rod adjacent to the eye-end. This was caused by the application of excessive tightening torque applied to the eye-end during assembly after component overhaul. Failure of the steering jack piston during operation will result in loss of nose wheel steering, which may lead to loss of directional control during critical phases of take-off and landing. The CAA issued British AD No. G-2004-0029 to address this issue for airplanes on the United Kingdom registry.
Recommendation
We recommend that you do the actions of SB 32-JA020741.
