Effects of digital altimetry on pilot workload

A series of VOR-DME instrument landing approaches was flown in the DC-9 full-workload simulator to compare pilot performance, scan behavior, and workload when using a computer-drum-pointer altimeter (CDPA) and a digital …

Crew procedures and workload of retrofit concepts for microwave landing system

Crew procedures and workload for Microwave Landing Systems (MLS) that could be retrofitted into existing transport aircraft were evaluated. Two MLS receiver concepts were developed.

Human workload in aviation

The application of human-factors analysis techniques to the evaluation of aircraft-crew workloads is discussed in an introductory overview.

The effectiveness of an oculometer training tape on pilot and copilot trainees in a commercial flight training program

A study was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of a video tape detailing the various aspects of instrument scanning by experienced pilots on performance by pilots and copilots undergoing flight training in a Boeing 7…

Instructor and student pilots' subjective evaluation of a general aviation simulator with a terrain visual system

Ten student pilots were given a 1 hour training session in the NASA Langley Research Center's General Aviation Simulator by a certified flight instructor and a follow-up flight evaluation was performed by the student's o…

Effects of various runway lighting parameters upon the relation between runway visual range and visual range of centerline and edge lights in fog

Thirty six students and 54 commercial airline pilots were tested in the fog chamber to determine the effect of runway edge and centerline light intensity and spacing, fog density, ambient luminance level, and lateral and…

Flight crew training technology: A review

The process of flight crew training is emphasized herein. Flight simulators and other training equipment are discussed, but the point is made that such equipment does not constitute the training process in its entirety.

Integrated Approach to Flight Crew Training

The computer based approach used by United Airlines for flight training is discussed. The human factors involved in specific aircraft accidents are addressed.

Management training for cockpit crews at Piedmont flight

A brief history of Piedmont Airlines' flight operations is presented. A captain-management seminar conducted regularly by Piedmont is discussed.

Dynamic training devices in CRM training

Pilot training effectiveness and flying safety of a seasonal tour flight company are described. The change from single pilot to two pilot operated twin otters is examined.

Innovative approaches to recurrent training

Innovative approaches to recurrent training for regional airline aircrews are explored. Guidelines for recurrent training programs which include in corporation of cockpit resource management are discussed. B.W.

Predicting operator workload during system design

A workload prediction methodology was developed in response to the need to measure workloads associated with operation of advanced aircraft.

Current training: Where are we?

Petroleum Helicopters, Inc. maintains a staff of 750 helicopter pilots. The initial, transition, upgrade, and recurrent training for these pilots requires a significant financial outlay.

A systematic approach to training: A training needs assessment

In an effort to determine the gap between the actual performance and the necessary performance of employees for the effective and efficient accomplishment of an organization's mission and goals, an organization-wide Trai…

The display of spatial information and visually guided behavior

The basic informational elements of spatial orientation are attitude and position within a coordinate system. The problem that faces aeronautical designers is that a pilot must deal with several coordinate systems, somet…

Certification of training

Training has been around as an informal process for countless years. Most higher order animals require some level of training in hunting, social skills, or other survival related skills to continue their existence beyond…

Revision of certification standards for aviation maintenance personnel

Part 65, Subparts D and E, of the Federal Aviation Regulations (FAR) identify the certification requirements for aviation mechanics and aviation repairmen.

Human versus automation in responding to failures: an expected-value analysis

A simple analytical criterion is provided for deciding whether a human or automation is best for a failure detection task. The method is based on expected-value decision theory in much the same way as is signal detection…

Flight Simulator Platform Motion and Air Transport Pilot Training

The influence of flight simulator platform motion on pilot training and performance was examined In two studies utilizing a B-727-200 aircraft simulator.

Pilot errors as a source of workload

A pilot opinion survey was conducted to develop a database for creating simulation scenarios that impose predetermined levels of pilot workload.

Inflight evaluation of four measures of pilot workload

Four measures of pilot workload were tested in the NASA C-141 Kuiper Airborne Observatory. The measured included a communications analysis, subjective ratings of workload, subjective ratings of additional factors related…
