Factual narrative

On July 2, 2007, at 1900 central daylight time, a Piper PA-36-285, N57600, operated by Speas Aviation Inc, received substantial damage when it veered off runway 36 at Belle Plaine Municipal Airport (TZT), Belle Plaine, Iowa, during landing rollout and impacted terrain. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time of the accident. The 14 CFR Part 137 aerial application flight was not operating on a flight plan. The commercial pilot was uninjured. The flight originated from Monticello, Iowa, at 1820 and was en route to TZT. The pilot stated the airplane veered off runway 36 (4,000 feet by 75 feet, concrete) during landing rollout, which he attributed to a failure of the left brake. Damage to the airplane included a bent left main wing spar. Visual inspection of the left brake assembly by the Federal Aviation Administration did not reveal any anomalies. The agricultural airplane was landing at the destination airport when it veered off the runway during rollout. The pilot stated that the left main landing gear brake failed.
