Factual narrative

The pilot of an amphibious float-equipped airplane reported that he had failed to retract the landing gear before landing on water. The fuselage sustained substantial damage. The pilot reported that there were no preaccident mechanical failures or malfunctions with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.
