Probable cause & findings
a loss of engine power for undetermined reasons resulting in a forced landing and subsequent impact with the ground. A factor in this accident was that the pilot did not obtain the proper touchdown point upon landing and landed long.
Factual narrative
On August 5, 2000, about 0800 central daylight time, a Cessna P337H, N5HN, registered to and operated by a private owner as a Title 14 CFR Part 91 personal flight, crashed after attempting a go-around at the Shelby County Airport, Alabaster, Alabama. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time of the accident and no flight plan was filed. The commercial-rated pilot was not injured. Three passengers reported minor injuries. The airplane incurred substantial damage. The flight had originated from Gallatin, Tennessee, the same day at 0700. According to the pilot's statement, "...I landed long and decided to make a standard go-around with full rpm and mixture. The engines did not produce the necessary power to sustain flight. I made the decision not to land in the nose down position and at the last seconds pulled the nose up for a full stall landing." The airplane had landed on runway 15, which was 3,797 feet long and 75 feet wide. According to the FAA Inspector's statement their respective manufacturers examined the engines and propellers. The examinations revealed no discrepancies with the engines or propellers. The pilot stated that he landed long and decided to make "...a standard go-around with full rpm and mixture. The engines did not produce the necessary power to sustain flight." He made the decision not to land in the nose down position and "at the last seconds pulled the nose up for a full stall landing." The airplane had landed on runway 15, which was 3,797 feet long and 75 feet wide. The examinations of the engines and the propellers revealed no discrepancies.
