Factual narrative

On September 18, 1998, at 1655 central daylight time, a Cessna 182K, N3054Q, operated by a private pilot, sustained substantial damage during a landing on runway 18 (3,300' X 75' dry/concrete), at Eldon Model Airpark, near Eldon, Missouri. The pilot stated that the airplane porpoised three or four times prior to the nose landing gear collapsing. The pilot reported no injuries. The personal 14 CFR Part 91 flight was operating in visual meteorological conditions. No flight plan was on file. The local flight departed at 1615. In his written statement, the pilot reported that he performed one landing on runway 36 and this was his second landing on runway 18. He said that during this approach to landing he flared high and bounced with the yoke pulled back for the flare. He said that he maintained yoke position through second and third bounce, but then relaxed the yoke position, which he said, resulted in a more nose down attitude. The nose gear collapsed and the firewall was damaged. The pilot, in his pilot report regarding owner safety recommendations stated: "more flight time and more frequent trips and landing practice". An inspection of the wreckage was conducted. The inspection did not reveal that any defects existed prior to the accident. The pilot of the accident airplane said that he flared high. He said he pulled back on the yoke for the flare and the airplane porpoised. He said that he maintained yoke position through the third bounce and then relaxed the yoke position.
