Factual narrative

On May 12, 2005, an Alitalia McDonnell Douglas MD-82, experienced a loss of power from the left engine, a Pratt & Whitney JT8D-217C, about two minutes after takeoff from the Leonardo da Vinci Airport, Rome, Italy. The pilots shutdown the engine, declared an emergency, and returned to Rome for an uneventful single -engine landing. The investigation of this incident is under the jurisdiction of the Agnezia nazionale per la Sicurezza del Volo (ANSV).
