Quantifying the Transfer Effectiveness of an Artificial Intelligence-Based Simulator Pre-Training Program for Student Pilots

Since the airline pilot shortage was initially studied in 2016, the pilot hiring model has been significantly impacted, with airlines hiring qualified pilots at unprecedented rates.

User Experience, Motivation and Self-Efficacy Comparisons Between Virtual Reality and Conventional PC-Based Flight Simulation Training

The current project investigated the effect of utilizing Virtual Reality (VR) technologies for flight training by comparing user experience, motivation, and self-efficacy when using conventional desktop flight simulation…

Integration of Virtual Reality Procedural Training in a Flight Training Curriculum

As Virtual Reality (VR) technology becomes more affordable, integrating VR training into pilot training programs is becoming a focus of many flight schools and universities.

Safety in Flight Training - An Analysis of the NTSB Data 2014-2018

There were 7,500 safety events in the NTSB data sets from 2013-2018. These events were analyzed using Chi-square, Cramer’s V, and the odds ratio.

Interactive Modules for Flight Training: A Review

The use of animation and video, combined with auditory and text components, to teach complex subjects can be beneficial to deepen understanding.

Preliminary Results of a Study Investigating Aviation Students' Intentions to use Virtual Reality for Flight Training

Educators have incorporated technology into flight training for decades. These devices have increased in complexity since the Link trainers of the early 20th century, resulting in aviation training devices, full flight s…

Students’ Perspective of Self-Guided Simulation Training on Process in the Initial Phase of Private Pilot Flight Training: A Preliminary Review

As the demand for flight training increases, self-guided training methods for students can be explored to determine their effect on environment for learning.

Preliminary Results of a Study Investigating Aviation Student’s Intentions to use Virtual Reality for Flight Training

Educators have incorporated technology into flight training for decades. These devices have increased in complexity since the Link trainers of the early 20th century, resulting in aviation training devices, full flight s…

Fatigue In Collegiate Aviation

Flight training has received little attention in fatigue research. Only transfers of knowledge gained in commercial and military aviation have been applied to general aviation without bridging the gap to the training env…

Fatigue Identification and Management in Flight Training: An Investigation of Collegiate Aviation Pilots

Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate collegiate aviation students’ self-awareness of their fatigue issues; to investigate possible causes of fatigue afflicting collegiate aviation students; and to investi…

Advanced UAS Training; Integration of Remote Live Aircraft Crash Investigation with UAS

Current Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) flight training generally operates at the ab-initio level. As UAS flight and academic programs evolve, so also must UAS training advance, specifically regarding new and evolving use…

Assessing General Aviation Pilots' Weather Knowledge and Self-Efficacy

While accident trends in General Aviation (GA) have decreased overall, accidents rates involving weather have remained relatively consistent over the past 10 years.

Flight Instructor Professionalism

The inherent risk associated with aviation demands a high level of professionalism among aviation employees to ensure safety. Professionalism consists of factors such as technical competence, personal competence, neatnes…

Understanding Generation: Implications for Flight Training, Hiring, and Retention

Generation is a much discussed topic in the literature on workforce training and education. The simultaneous presence of numerous generations in the workforce has created tensions, challenges, and opportunities.

Flight School Capacity in the U.S. - Turbulence Ahead?

For over a generation, U.S. air carriers have relied almost exclusively on external third parties for basic “ab initio” pilot training.

Mental Engineering - A Significant Contribution to Resilience Engineering in Aviation

Currently, far reaching changes can be noticed at the core of human learning of complex tasks. The share of concrete learning diminishes in favor of digital and virtual learning methods, which offer enormous economical a…

The Optimal Flight Training Experience

Up to 80 percent of those who begin flight training drop out without ever earning a pilot certificate. That’s an alarming and unsustainable statistic for schools, instructors, and the entire aviation industry.
