eVTOL Aircraft Pilot Training, Certification, and Integration in the NAS Presented by Samantha Brown & Todd Lisak As we approach a transformative era in aviation, powered-lift aircraft, particularly electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) platforms, have captured the FAA’s and industry attention. As human factors (HF), pilot training & qualification experts, we are excited to emphasize the vital role HF play in the certification and operation of these aircraft. ALPA’s stance is that innovative operations of powered-lift aircraft must encompass the training and utilization of safety-critical technologies to meet safety expectations. The development of these systems and a collaborative approach is essential for safety, especially in complex aerodromes and urban environments where these aircraft will operate alongside traditional aviation. A distinctive aspect of eVTOLs is their design variability and limited flight time due to battery technology. Consequently, a type rating for each eVTOL is necessary, reflecting the specialized training required to understand their unique characteristics. These aircraft necessitate tailored training and certification. Moreover, as powered-lift aircraft push the boundaries of conventional flight, advanced training becomes imperative. Pilots and operators must master the aircraft and advanced automation systems, control systems, propulsion technologies, and dynamic operational environments. HF experts are pivotal in designing aircraft systems, operations, and training programs addressing the cognitive and psychomotor demands of operating powered-lift aircraft. This presentation will explore powered-lift aircraft multifaceted challenges and opportunities, the development of safety-critical technologies, and the importance of advanced training.
