Aircraft involved

Probable cause & findings

The pilot’s failure to maintain directional control while taxiing in gusting wind conditions.

Factual narrative

The pilot reported that, while taxiing a tailwheel-equipped airplane in strong and gusty wind conditions, and as he turned the airplane 180° downwind, a strong gust of wind lifted the tail, and it subsequently nosed over. The airplane sustained substantial damage to the left wing lift struts and rudder. The pilot reported that there were no preaccident mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.
