Factual narrative
On May 11, 2002, about 0815 central daylight time, an Aeronca 7FC, N85258, piloted by a private pilot, sustained substantial damage when it impacted terrain about 200 feet short of runway 18 (2,450 feet by 20 feet, asphalt), at the Brennand Airport, Neenah, Wisconsin. The airplane was approaching to land when the accident occurred. The 14 CFR Part 91 personal flight was operating in visual meteorological conditions without a flight plan. The pilot was seriously injured, and the passenger received minor injuries. The local flight originated at 0800. In a written report, the pilot said that the airplane impacted the ground about 10 yards before a row of trees. He said that he did not, "... remember anything between being on final and being pulled from the plane." A postaccident examination of the airplane revealed no anomalies that could be determined to have existed prior to impact.
