Aircraft involved
Probable cause & findings
The pilot's failure to maintain directional control during the landing roll with a gusting quartering tailwind.
Factual narrative
The pilot in the tailwheel equipped airplane reported that, while landing with a quartering tailwind, a strong gust of wind was encountered that “weathervaned” the airplane. The airplane veered to the right and the right wing subsequently collided with a post on the edge of the runway. The right wing and fuselage were substantially damaged. The pilot reported that there were no preaccident mechanical failures or malfunctions with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation. At the time of the accident, the pilot was landing the airplane on runway 9 with wind from 230° at 8 knots gusting to 15 knots. Source: NTSB Aviation Accident Database Retrieved: 2026-02-12
