Probable cause & findings
The pilot's failure to maintain directional control during the landing roll with a quartering tailwind.
Factual narrative
The pilot of the tailwheel equipped airplane reported that he performed a wheel landing, and that during the landing roll, as the tailwheel contacted the ground, he felt the left wing start to get low. The pilot attempted to correct with aileron input; however, the lower left wing struck the runway. The pilot applied full power to abort the landing; however, airplane veered to the right and exited the right side of the runway. The left main landing gear struck rough terrain and the airplane subsequently nosed over and came to rest inverted, which resulted in substantial damage to the left lower wing and rudder. The pilot reported that there were no preaccident mechanical failures or malfunctions with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation. At the time of the accident, the pilot was landing the airplane on runway 02 with wind from 180° at 7 knots. Source: NTSB Aviation Accident Database Retrieved: 2026-02-12
