THE LOSS OF ENGINE POWER FOR UNDETERMINED REASONS.
Factual narrative
On February 14, 1994, about 1745 central standard time, a Cessna 150L, N10797, registered to Romac, Inc., collided with a pole while making a forced landing on a road near Ocean Springs, Mississippi, while on a 14 CFR Part 91, instructional flight. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time and no flight plan was filed. The aircraft received substantial damage and the commercial-rated flight instructor and student pilot were not injured. The flight originated at Ocean Springs, Mississippi, on February 14, 1994, at 1730. The flight instructor stated they had just completed a second power off stall and climbed back to the originating altitude of 2,500 feet when the engine failed suddenly. While attempting a forced landing on a road the left wing contacted a power pole and the aircraft descended uncontrolled and came to rest in a marsh adjacent to the road. Postcrash examination of the aircraft and engine by FAA inspectors indicated the airframe and engine fuel systems contained uncontaminated fuel. The engine was placed on a test stand and operated to full power with no malfunctions. Review of carburetor icing probability charts indicated the aircraft was operating in conditions conducive to serious icing at cruise power. The pilots had just completed a second power off stall and climbed back to 2,500 feet agl when the engine suddenly quit. While making a forced landing on a road the aircraft struck a pole and crashed into a swamp. After the accident the airframe and engine fuel systems were found to contain uncontaminated fuel. The engine was placed on a test stand and operated to full power with no evidence of failure or malfunction.
