Factual narrative

On April 26, 1995, about 1130 eastern daylight time, a Piper PA-28-140B, N95116, piloted by John S. Kalafian, on a personal flight, was substantially damaged during a forced landing at Trenton Robbinsville Airport (N87), Robbinsville, New Jersey. The pilot was not injured. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed. The flight was being conducted under CFR 14 Part 91. During a telephone interview with the pilot, he stated that he departed runway 29 from N87 and continued in the traffic pattern. The pilot turned final with the flaps extended 2 notches (25 degrees). During final approach, about 400 feet above ground level, the engine lost total power. The pilot's attempts to restore power were unsuccessful. The airplane impacted bushes and came to rest approximately 50 yards from the approach end of the runway. Post accident examination by a Federal Aviation Administration Inspector, revealed no anomalies with the engine. THE PILOT STAYED IN THE PATTERN AFTER TAKEOFF. WHILE ON FINAL FOR RUNWAY 29, THE ENGINE LOST TOTAL POWER. THE PILOT'S ATTEMPTS TO RESTORE POWER WERE UNSUCCESSFUL. A FORCED LANDING WAS MADE, AND THE AIRPLANE CAME TO REST IN BUSHES 50 YARDS FROM THE APPROACH END OF THE RUNWAY. POSTACCIDENT EXAMINATION REVEALED NO ANOMALIES WITH THE ENGINE.
