Probable cause & findings

The pilot’s exceedance of the airplanes’ critical angle of attack resulting in a stall at an altitude too low to recover.

Factual narrative

The pilot reported that he approached a private airport’s grass runway flying too fast. The airplane floated past the point of intended landing and, without enough runway remaining to execute a safe landing, the pilot made the decision to go around. During the go-around the pilot realized that they would not be able to climb over powerlines at the end of the runway. He then elected to make a left turn to avoid the powerlines, during which the airplane encountered an aerodynamic stall, and subsequently impacted the ground resulting in substantial damage to the fuselage, both wings, and the empennage. The pilot reported that there were no preaccident mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.
